  • NUPENG Warns of Imminent Strike as Dangote Allegedly Breaches DSS-Brokered Agreement

  • The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has raised fresh concerns over what it describes as a breach of a peace pact by the Dangote Group, warning that a nationwide strike may be imminent if urgent steps are not taken.

According to NUPENG, the agreement—brokered on September 9, 2025, by the Department of State Services (DSS) in the presence of three federal ministers—guaranteed workers the right to freely associate and unionize. However, the union alleges that Dangote Group has since taken actions that undermine the deal, including instructing petroleum tanker drivers to remove NUPENG stickers from their trucks and restricting their access to load products at the Dangote Refinery.

The union described these moves as a blatant disregard for Nigeria’s labour laws and official institutions, stressing that such actions could destabilize industrial peace in the country’s critical oil and gas sector.

NUPENG has therefore placed its members nationwide on red alert, signaling a possible resumption of its suspended industrial action. The union also called on the Federal Government to prevent the misuse of security agents in the dispute and urged solidarity from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), civil society groups, and international labour organizations.

As of the time of this report, the Dangote Group has yet to issue a response to the allegations. Meanwhile, industry watchers warn that a strike in the petroleum sector could disrupt fuel distribution across Nigeria, potentially leading to supply shortages and economic strain.
