  • N181.6m Firepower: Customs Seize Massive Petroleum Products in Adamawa Smuggling Bust

  • The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has achieved a major breakthrough in its anti-smuggling efforts, announcing the interception of petroleum products with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over ₦181.6 million in Adamawa State. This massive operation, conducted under the specialized unit "Operation Whirlwind," highlights the intensified commitment of the federal government to clamp down on economic sabotage, particularly the illegal export of subsidized fuel.

    The Scale of the Seizure

The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, ACG Kolapo Oladeji, disclosed the details at a news conference in Yola. The seizure represents the culmination of 55 different operations executed over a period of eight weeks along the volatile border corridors between Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon.

The total volume of products confiscated by the Customs operatives amounted to 284,006 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. This substantial haul was found concealed in various means of transport, including:

    2,642 jerrycans (25 litres each)

    485 drums (220 litres each)

11,256 litres found stored at a filling station

Authorities also seized two large wooden boats used for ferrying the fuel across the border waterways.

The operation was specifically designed to ensure that the economic benefits of petroleum resources remain within Nigeria, strengthening the nation's energy security.

    Truncating the Smuggling Supply Chains

ACG Oladeji emphasized that the crackdown directly aligns with the core mandates of the administration to foster economic growth and enhance energy and food security. The focus of Operation Whirlwind Zone 'D' has been to make the international border "airtight," effectively frustrating the efforts of smuggling syndicates attempting to exploit price differentials between Nigeria and neighboring countries.

The seizures confirm the sophisticated logistics used by smugglers, often involving high-risk terrains, riverine areas, and remote checkpoints along the Nigeria-Cameroon border. By disrupting these illegal supply chains, the NCS not only prevents massive revenue leakage but also strengthens the security of the border regions, as illicit trade often funds other forms of criminality.

    Legal Action and Auction

In line with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, the confiscated petroleum products are scheduled to be auctioned to the public. This measure is designed to reclaim the resources for public benefit.

An Assistant Legal Adviser from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation noted that offenses related to fuel smuggling are viewed with extreme severity, as they constitute a threat to national security, and can attract penalties as harsh as life imprisonment. The message to economic saboteurs is clear: the government has repositioned its agencies to ensure stringent enforcement and zero tolerance for cross-border petroleum smuggling.

The Customs Service is appealing to all stakeholders and border community residents to continue their cooperation, noting that intelligence-driven operations, supported by community vigilance, are the most effective means to curb this damaging economic activity.
