Plateau Government Cracks Down on Illegal Schools to Revamp Education
The Plateau State Government has intensified efforts to sanitize the education sector by shutting down several illegal private schools operating across the state. The decisive move follows growing concerns over quackery, negligence, and unsafe learning environments that put children’s lives at risk.
This crackdown comes in the aftermath of the March 2023 Saint Francis School tragedy in Jos North, where over 30 pupils lost their lives after a substandard building collapsed. Investigations revealed the school had no government approval or structural clearance—exposing deep-rooted problems in the regulation of private institutions.

Task Force Orders Immediate Closure
On Wednesday, a multi-agency task force led by the Director of Quality Assurance, Mr. Gimba Yusuf, sealed off several unapproved schools across Plateau State.
Among the affected institutions were:
Global College of Education, Fobur
Golden Valley School, Pump Street
Premier College of Health, William Street
Hill Advanced College, Bauchi Road
Blessed Hope College of Education, Zinariya
…and at least ten others.
The government emphasized that no school will be allowed to operate without proper registration, facility inspections, qualified teachers, and provisional clearance pending full national accreditation.
Calls for Lasting Reform
Education observers have welcomed the crackdown but warn that shutting down illegal schools alone is not enough. They are urging the government to enforce routine audits, transparent monitoring systems, whistleblower channels, and community participation to ensure accountability within the sector.
Without such measures, they argue, tragedies like the Saint Francis School collapse could happen again.
A Bold Step Towards Safer Schools
For parents and students, the closures represent both relief and renewed demand for reform. Many believe that revamping Plateau’s education system is long overdue and that authorities must follow through with consistent action, not just one-off clampdowns.
As one observer noted, “Plateau must never again allow innocent children to be sacrificed on the altar of greed and negligence.”
