  • WASSCE 2025: WAEC releases the actual results and performance of students up from 38% to 62%

  • The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the corrected WAEC 2025 results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE 2025) for School Candidates, confirming that over 1.2 million students passed with five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. This announcement follows a correction to figures initially released earlier in the week, which had caused widespread concern among students, parents, and schools across Nigeria.

According to WAEC’s Head of the Nigeria Office, Amos Dangu, who addressed journalists in Lagos, a total of 1,239,884 out of 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the WASSCE 2025 obtained at least five credits in key subjects. This translates to a pass rate of 62.96%, far higher than the 38.32% (755,043 candidates) reported in WAEC’s earlier, erroneous release. The initial data error had painted a much darker picture of student performance before being corrected.

Despite the upward revision, the official WAEC 2025 results still reflect a decline compared to the 2024 examination. Last year, 72.12% of candidates achieved five credits, including English and Mathematics, meaning this year’s figure represents a drop of over nine percentage points. This trend has sparked discussions among educators and policymakers on the factors affecting student performance in core subjects.

WAEC explained that the initial mistake in the WASSCE 2025 data was discovered during an internal review process. The Council temporarily suspended WAEC result checking on its portal while corrections were made. Candidates are now advised to log on to the official WAEC result portal to recheck their updated grades. In its statement, WAEC apologised for the confusion caused by the error and assured the public that new safeguards will be implemented to prevent such mistakes in future examinations.

However, not all candidates can access their WAEC 2025 results just yet. WAEC disclosed that some students under state sponsorship remain unable to view their results due to unpaid examination fees. Mr Dangu confirmed that three of the four indebted state governments have now settled their debts, while one state is still finalising payment. Until these payments are made, affected candidates will be unable to use the WAEC result portal to check their grades.

The release of the corrected WASSCE 2025 figures has brought relief to thousands of students whose academic prospects depend on these results. For many, the updated scores will open doors to university admission, scholarship opportunities, and other educational advancements. As WAEC strengthens its internal systems and improves result verification processes, both students and educators will be hoping for greater transparency, accuracy, and improved performance in future West African examinations.
