Dangote Truck Drivers Earn ₦210,000–₦280,000 Monthly, Outpacing Nigerian Graduates and Minimum Wage

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has revealed that truck drivers employed under the Dangote Refinery’s new distribution system earn significantly higher wages than Nigeria’s minimum wage and even more than many university graduates.

According to Dangote, drivers handling the company’s in-house fleet of 4,000 CNG-powered trucks earn three to four times Nigeria’s minimum wage of ₦70,000. This places their monthly income between ₦210,000 and ₦280,000, making truck driving one of the most competitive blue-collar jobs in the country.

Job Creation and Benefits

The refinery’s distribution initiative is expected to create 24,000 new jobs across logistics, maintenance, dispatch, and workshop management. In addition to attractive salaries, truck drivers who maintain accident-free records for five years while transporting hazardous goods will qualify for housing loans, offering them long-term security.

How It Compares to Graduate Salaries

Reports show that many entry-level graduate jobs in Nigeria offer:

₦80,000 – ₦90,000 for roles such as content writers and customer service representatives.

₦150,000 for digital marketers, sales representatives, and graphic designers.

₦200,000 for web designers.

This means Dangote drivers often out-earn graduates in fields requiring formal education, further highlighting Nigeria’s wage imbalance.

Industry Concerns

The decision to operate an in-house fleet of trucks has faced criticism from industry unions like PETROAN and NOGASA, who fear monopolistic practices and potential disruption of the fuel supply chain. However, Dangote insists the move will cut distribution costs by ₦1.7 trillion annually while creating jobs rather than eliminating them.
