| FG Launches “Inspire Live(s)” Online Classes to Transform Secondary Education in Nigeria |
The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has officially launched a nationwide digital learning initiative — Inspire Live(s) — aimed at delivering real-time online classes to secondary school students across Nigeria. The programme is intended to tackle persistent challenges in the education sector such as teacher shortages, unequal access, and frequent disruptions to learning.
What is Inspire Live(s)?
Inspire Live(s) is a virtual classroom initiative that streams live, interactive lessons directly to students, regardless of their location or school type. According to the FME, this move is designed to “democratise access to quality education and ensure that no child is left behind.”
The launch aligns with the broader education reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the federal government.
How the Online Classes Work: Structure & Subjects
Currently, live classes are being delivered for junior secondary school (JSS 1 and JSS 2) and senior secondary school (SSS) students.
Classes run Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Lessons are conducted by certified master teachers using the video-conferencing platform Cisco Webex.
Subjects Offered
Junior Secondary (JSS) Senior Secondary (SSS)
Basic Science, Mathematics, English, ICT, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology, Civic Education, French, Physical Education, Religious Studies, History, Business Studies Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing/Catering Craft, Civic Education, Automobile Mechanics
The plan further includes eventual expansion to cover all classes from Primary 1 through Senior Secondary 3.
Who Can Participate & How It Will Be Coordinated
Participation is open to both public and private schools throughout Nigeria.
To ensure smooth nationwide implementation, the ministry has directed all state education authorities to:
Appoint a State Focal Officer to coordinate Inspire Live(s) activities.
Circulate programme details to school principals.
Ensure that designated schools are equipped with basic ICT facilities and reliable internet connectivity.
Register participating schools strictly through the official Inspire support channels.
Why This Move Matters for Nigerian Education
Expanding Reach & Equity
For many students — especially in rural or underserved areas — access to qualified teachers and stable schooling has been a challenge. Inspire Live(s) promises to bring quality instruction into classrooms regardless of geography. This could significantly reduce educational inequality across the country.
Addressing Teacher Shortage & Disruptions
With chronic shortages of qualified teachers in many regions, plus frequent strikes and strikes-related disruptions, the online platform offers a stable alternative. By centralizing quality instruction through master teachers, the programme could ensure continuity of education even amid local teacher shortages.
Space for Digital Transformation
This initiative signals a broader shift toward EdTech and digital learning in Nigeria. As the government implements its National Educational Technology Strategy, programmes like Inspire Live(s) show how technology can be leveraged to modernize education.
Flexibility and Inclusion
By delivering lessons virtually, students who may have previously dropped out due to distance, mobility issues, or infrastructure constraints can regain access to learning. The model offers flexibility, especially for learners whose circumstances make traditional schooling difficult.
Challenges & What to Watch
Infrastructure Requirements: Success depends heavily on schools having reliable power, internet access, and basic ICT infrastructure — which remains unreliable in many parts of Nigeria.
Digital Divide: Students in remote or impoverished areas may still be excluded if they lack devices or connectivity, potentially widening inequalities unless addressed.
Implementation & Oversight: Effective coordination at state and school levels is essential. Delays or lack of adherence could undermine the programme’s impact.
Sustainability: Maintaining quality in virtual instruction — including teacher training, engagement, and assessment integrity — will determine the long-term viability of the initiative.
What’s Next
The ministry aims to expand coverage gradually to include all classes from Primary 1 up to Senior Secondary 3.
State education authorities must ensure ICT readiness in schools.
Stakeholders — including parents, teachers, and communities — will need to adapt to and support virtual learning as part of regular schooling.
Monitoring and evaluation will be key to ensuring equitable access, quality education, and measurable impact on learning outcomes.
Conclusion
The launch of Inspire Live(s) marks a bold new chapter for education in Nigeria — one that embraces technology to deliver equitable, uninterrupted learning to millions of secondary school students. If successfully implemented, this initiative could help close long-standing gaps in access, teacher availability, and educational quality across the country. As Nigeria moves forward, Inspire Live(s) could well be a cornerstone in transforming the nation’s educational landscape.
